Previous experience / responsibilities:

             Head of the UK National Reference Laboratory and Fera Science  lead for environmental contaminants, covering topics relating to the whole agri-food chain.

             Chartered chemist with 32 years’ experience in analytical chemistry relating to Food Safety and Quality.

             Member of the EFSA CONTAM Panel responsible for risk assessment of food contaminants (2010-2012) and (2015-present) and was on the EFSA ANS Panel responsible for risk assessment of food Additives and Nutrient Sources (2012-2014). EFSA carries out risk assessments and offers advice to produce a sound foundation for European policies and legislation

             Honorary Senior Lecturer (Teaching and Research) at the University of Manchester, Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences (in recognition of contribution to academic work, in particular the design and implementation of a modular MSc course in food chemical safety and integrity – Food)

             Author of around 275 papers (see Martin’s publications); with about half in peer reviewed scientific literature, the remainder book chapters, EFSA Opinions, trade articles etc.

 

Previous employment:

1985 – May 2017: Fera Science Ltd (previously Food and Environment Research Agency; CSL, UK Department for Food, Environment and Rural Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food).  Final position as Science lead; environmental contaminants.

 

Research interests and expertise include the application of analytical chemistry to multi-disciplinary projects focussed on understanding origin, fate, behaviour and effects of chemicals in the food chain, and their impact on human health. This includes studies on environmental pathways, remediation, risk assessment methodologies, emergency response, bioanalytical methods, ecotoxicology, reproductive toxicology and identification and prioritisation schemes for emerging contaminants.
